At the beginning of the book, you our introduced to a character that has a major impact on all of its guests. Hill House. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against the hills, holding darkness within. This is just one of the chilling sentences from the opening paragraph. The fear begins to set in. Shortly after, you are introduced to the strong yet cautious Dr. John Montague. He is a doctor of philosophy and has a new study up his sleeve. He is going to rent the haunted Hill House and document all that goes on. To accompany him and further the study, are three assistants. We will write a custom essay on The Haunting Of Hill House specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now After considerable research, three patients are chosen. Eleanor Vance, Luke Sanderson, and Theodora (Theo) are the chosen few. You are first brought into the life of Eleanor Vance. Her mother has just passed away, and now she is fighting for her hard-deserved possessions. Eleanor has never been accepted. She has always been on her own and liked it that way. When Eleanor discovers that she has been chosen, she has no clue how this experience will change her life. Next, we are introduced to Theodora. Her last name is never revealed which gives her a sense of mystery. Theo could be considered any mans dream. She is quite beautiful and has that certain something. Theo gladly accepts the invitation to Hill House, and nothing more is said. Luke Sanderson is the future inheritor of Hill House. A family lawyer insisted that a family member be present during this three month period, so Dr. Montague gladly chose Luke. Shortly after, Eleanor, Theodora, Luke, Dr. Montague, and his secretary arri ve at Hill House. They are introduced to the mysterious housekeepers, the Dudleys. Theo and Eleanor quickly form a bond and explore the home. They discover how elaborate and titanic Hill House is. The fireplace, walk out veranda, and library are just some of the things that the girls discover. Everyone loves the house for its beauty and extravagance. Later on in the evening, Dr. Montague tells the long history of Hill House. It was owned by Hugh Crain. He had two children, but their mother was killed in a carriage accident just before she arrived at the house. His second wife died from a fall, possible suicide. Crains third wife died of tuberculosis. Shortly after, Crain passed away in Europe. His two daughters were left with the house, but many fights occur over who should get it. The older sister dies, and the young sister ends up owning it. She commits suicide, and Hill House is left to the Sandersons. The first night was fine, but many things begin to happen. The following night, Theodora and Eleanor have a terrifying encounter. While sleeping, Eleanor hears a pounding sound. She wakes up. The sound continues, so she rushes to Theodoras room. The room becomes ice cold, and the pounding becomes louder. After an intense amount of time, Dr. Montague and Luke arrive. Another thing is discovered by the guests. Outside of the nursery, a cold spot occurs. Nothing can be explained about the cold feeling, but it occurs every time they walk passed it. Over time, Eleanor sees and feels the presence of a superior being. The following quotation comes from the chilling moment when Eleanor discovers no one is in her room: God God-whose hand was I holding? Over time, Eleanor becomes attached to the house. She feels like the house is talking to her. On one occasion, WELCOME HOME ELEANOR was written over Theos room and clothing. It was written in blood. Eleanor becomes furious, thinking her fellow spouses wrote the frightening message. Then again, she feels like the house is speaking to her. She feels like Hill House is part of her. Later on, this obsession goes one step too far. .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 , .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .postImageUrl , .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 , .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047:hover , .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047:visited , .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047:active { border:0!important; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047:active , .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047 .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2ed79bb9c4080a1212424b309a1cd047:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Sample Fund-Raising Letter EssayTowards the end of the book, Mrs. Montague arrives at Hill House. With her, she brings planchette. Planchette is a form of the ouija board. With planchette, Mrs. Montague can contact the spirits of the house. In her planchette sessions, the names Nellie, Nell, and Eleanor are brought up many times. This feeds the obsession of Eleanor and Hill House. After time, Eleanor begins to feel as if Hill House was her house. It has almost become a friend. The paranormal encounters and psychological effects of the house made her almost, insane. Dr. Montague and the others all agreed that she needed to be home. It was for her own safety. The morning that Eleanor was scheduled to leave was like any other. Mrs. Dudley set out their breakfast, and all in all, it seemed like a normal day. Everyone gave their good-byes, and Theo was especially sad to see Eleanor go. Eleanor got into her car, but something wasnt right. Her mind was telling her that Hill House belonged to her. How dare they tell me to leave, and what gives them the right to make the rules? Hill House was HER house. In an act to save her dignity, Eleanor presses the gas. She turns the wheel and crashes straight into a tree. Her life had ended. After an ending like this, you begin to think. Was Hill House really haunted? Or was it the psyche of Eleanor Vance that caused these encounters? All in all, Eleanor was never accepted, and she finally found someone that accepted her for what she was. That someone was Hill House. This story became one of my favorites after reading it. I would recommend this book to any person who has been the outcast. Book Reports

Levendary Café Essays

Levendary Cafà © Essays Levendary Cafà © Paper Levendary Cafà © Paper Levendary cafe is a US-based fast food chain. Mia Foster is a CEO of Levendary cafe, who does not have international management experience. The Levendary cafe have their own concept and approach (delighting the customers) to obtain the US market. However, with the depression of domestic market, Levendary eyes the Chinese market to expansion. After one year of its expansion into the Chinese market, the staff has become concerned that company’s major problem of moving too far from the concept of Levendary store design and local menu, which is detrimental to build a positive brand image in China. There was a lack of strategic plan and inconsistency, Furthermore, different reporting and internal management structure is another problem CEO faced. Headquarter Managers including CEO and CFO want to solve the problem by changing the Chinese store design and menu, and hiring international financial analyst even though the financial report that is provided by Peter Steele(CFO) shows that Louis Chen (president of Levendary China) provided great achievements. Therefore, this proposal will give some strategies to deal with the problems of core concept, reporting and company structure that similar company will face, and will analyze these commercial problems with some theories. Recommendation and benefits There are several recommendations, which could be implemented for cross collaboration management and effective decision-making. 1. Strengthening research and cultural intelligence of the foreign markets 2. Establishing shared goals and documentation . Adjusting the organizational structure and management team Firstly, building cultural intelligence appears to be an ideal method to address the issues of different cultural backgrounds in the service-oriented business context. It not only helps to understand how people from different countries interact with stakeholders such as government agencies, partners, rivals and customers, but also how these cultural values affect customers purchasing decisions and their satisfactions. Tian, R Wang, C 2010) For instance, launching the business in China should have an in-depth knowledge about the importance of the personal relationship, called Guanxi, protecting the reputations and bureaucratic systems (Qin, C Zhang, C 2015). This would also result in positive effects in terms of adopting the restaurant concepts, involving the brand images, marketing programs, location choices, controlling cost structure and management styles as well. Second, understanding mutual goals can play a pivotal role in service-oriented businesses in overseas market by working with partners and managing a geographically dispersed team. This could overcome the miscommunication raised by the different language, conflicts, and cultural noises. To establish a common goal with partners, there are clear documentations for key performance indicators (KPI) and reporting systems. In order to compete for lower margin restaurant businesses, quick reaction based on the performance should help to keep the market share in China. Third, establishing a new functional department in China appears to be an ideal strategy to address the issue of decision-making. Such department should involve independent marketing, food development and operating functions, which may reduce the problem of the hierarchy of parent companies. Furthermore, this new department should build the team members by the experienced headquarters workers and new local workers. For this recommendation to be effective, this department should able to create decision-making protocols and assigning responsibilities. These would also result in positive effects in terms of commercial reasons, It can be seen that in Chinese revenue per customer is relatively lower than the US market. Increasing sales volume and saving the fixed costs appears to be an ideal strategy to address this issues based on the case study. Understanding of ethnic culture and business environment can help to encourage sales revenues in quick casual segments. Furthermore, creating shared goals and documentation could possibly minimize the administration costs and prevent the sunk cost related to marketing and pre-opening expenses. Establishing independent department should promote effective strategic decision making associated with brand images, exterior and interior design, which lead to increase in market shares and reputation of its business. Analysis When first entering new markets, MNEs may face a problem that corporate culture may clash with the local culture. This clash may result from various factors such as culture differences, and different wage levels, etc. In order to minimize clash, it is significant for MNEs to conduct market research and build cultural intelligence. According to Meyer (2015), the adaptation of a company’s culture often plays a key role in company’s success, and how corporate culture maintains depends on their products or competitors. Moreover, if employees fully adapt to corporate core culture, it may be difficult for them to deal with domestic suppliers and partners. In Levendary cafe’s case, Levendary cafe US is very proud of its tasty and high-quality foods as well as its restaurant designs. However, it is challenging for Levendary cafe’ to accepted by Chinese customers due to culture and wage levels difference. If Chinese branch VP Chen maintains all of foods and design from Levendary in the USA, he may fail in China because Chinese customers have different tastes and consumer views from Americans. Therefore, MNEs should focus on adapting their corporate cultures to domestic cultures carefully when they are entering new markets. Cultural variables affect the Cross-Communication process and Decision making the process by influencing a person’s perception or attitude, organizations, and their past versus future orientation. Therefore, understanding Hofstede’s and Trompenar’s cultural value dimensions of the host countries would help the headquarters manage across borders without culture shock In the Communication process, these cultural variables cause cultural noise, which means misinterpretation of the message from a sender to receiver or anything that undermines the communication of the intended meaning. Ethnocentric attitude is one of the sources of noise in cross culture communication (Deresky, 2017) In the Levendary cafe case study, Foster insisted hiring a financial analyst to manage China audit team and Chen refused to cooperate. In addition, when Foster raised concerns about Levendary’s reputation and image, Chen felt his hard work and efforts were not being appreciated. To avoid cultural noise, Foster should develop cultural sensitivity, show empathy, and have face- face communication Besides cultural differences, the headquarters should comply with the local law and government regulations regarding taxes and accounting system of the subsidiary country, which doesn’t apply to the US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Therefore, to standardize the reporting structures and other financial procedures, a new division in the company with global team members should be created, specifically to oversee all the operations of the US controlled foreign subsidiaries, and henceforth streamline the communication between them, and evaluate the operation performances and strategy implementations in monthly or quarterly periods. Due to the lack of international management and expanding experience, Levendary cafe needs to recruit more local or foreign employees to build a new department for China market, because China is a potential market with its growing GDP. Furthermore, for improving the effectiveness of communication and increasing the efficiency, the headquarter could provide a separate path for Chinese managers to directly report to headquarter. Other established players like KFC, McDonalds are more standardized and successful in Asia though they haven’t made many changes to menus, Deny’s in Japan changed the entire menu catering towards local taste preferences but the levendary cafe in China changed both the menu and the look and feel of it depending on the location. Therefore, â€Å"Thinking Local and Acting Global† is a successful and mature strategy for quick service restaurant chain to develop foreign markets.

Cosmopolitanism Must Be Left as an Individual Choice Essay

Cosmopolitanism Must Be Left as an Individual Choice - Essay Example New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Los Angeles as well as London are basic examples of "cosmopolitanized" cities around the globe embracing an eclectic mix of people with various cultures and traditions in a seemingly harmonious way. But this does not mean that there are no concerns being raised. In fact, elsewhere, discrimination still permeates even in highly cosmopolitan cities like New York where "cosmopolitan" lifestyle has been a trademark as against "other" cities. There exists a stark idiosyncrasy on perception of being a "cosmopolitan". Either one has embraced and integrated the word to one's own lifestyle or "tolerate" the existence of this culture, if it may be considered as such. The United States, for one, in trying to protect and allow all the Constitutional privileges of its citizens, which at present vary in their "origin" or nationalities has its scholars and thinkers argue on which must come first: the individual which is associated with liberal rights, or the group which also exercises their rights to organize as provided for by their liberal rights. Barry (2002) aptly argued in his "Culture and Equality: An Egalitarian Critique of Multiculturalism" book that "What we might find out by experience is that institutionalizing group representation offers opportunities and incentives for political entrepreneurs to whip up intragroup solidarity and intergroup hostility in the pursuit of power. And indeed this has happened all over the world virtually every time group representation has been introduced." Backed with empirical case studies as well as theories that made his presentation and argument not only convincing but powerful, his insights explored in depth religious and educational issues such as the case of Sikhs in Britain, Amish, and Quebec separatism. Without neglecting the rights of the members of minority groups, he calls to attention the reader to the concept of universal rights as "(universal) rules define a choice set which is the same for everybody; within that choice set people pick a particular course of action by deciding what is best calculated to satisfy their underlying preferences for outcomes uniform rules create identical choice sets, then opportunities are equal," (Barry, 2002). This goes to say that individual rights come first before group or collective choices. He implied that "rule and exception" approaches to public policy must encompass a universality that is applied equally among all citizens to remove the danger of protectionism and that the best way to help the least advantaged is by avoiding politics of difference and guaranteeing the full benefits of citizenship. Barry went on to add that "within a liberal state all groups are free to deploy their energies and recourses in pursuit of culturally derived objectives on the same terms." Likewise, The Wilson Quarterly (1995) quoted Dr. Samuel Johnson, who famously said "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." Liberals were hailed to have gone further by embracing "all humankind " scoring on patriotic pride as "both morally dangerous and, ultimately subversive of

Managing Change in the Urology Department of a National Health Service Essay

Managing Change in the Urology Department of a National Health Service Hospital in England - Essay Example It is clear from the discussion that the events that caused the need for change in the hospital were the combined financial crisis and the newly introduced regulations on the number of working hours for hospital personnel. Improving the situation will require the application of effective strategies and techniques that would change the current situation. The strategies and techniques require efficient processes and procedures. The hospital should be prepared to apply efficient change initiatives that are inclusive and address the needs of all the stakeholders. Otherwise, resistance will arise among the stakeholders. The three crucial areas that require the change include stakeholder/employee relationships, management of technological change, and worker motivation. This report begins with the summary of the organization that paves way for discussion on the issues that require close attention. The mission of the National Health Service Hospital in England is to sustain continuous improv ement in the delivery of health care services. The management seeks to ensure a healthy working environment for the employees as well as other stakeholders. The Department of Urology is struggling to respond to external pressures for change that have threatened its ability to offer efficient medical care. The hospital works with five consultant surgeons, a few middle-grade and junior doctors, a range of nurses and other clinical personnel. The hospital infrastructure is not efficient enough to offer competitive and efficient health care services. The events that triggered a need for change in the hospital were the combined financial crisis and the newly introduced regulations on the number of working hours for the hospital personnel. The introduced regulations on treatment duration made the hospital sub-contract some of the treatments to a private hospital, leading to financial losses. The factor that contributed to the shortage of medical staff is the conflict in the regulations in volving the working hours. The management of the crisis is loaded with many challenges such as the tension between managers and clinicians and failure to agree on the staff capacity, allocation of extra beds, and operating theater. Others include information overload, ineffective problem solving, disagreement on the number and qualifications of new entrants, and inefficient data collection. The current challenges facing the Urology Department of the National Health Service Hospital in England are related to the incompetence of the stakeholders in managing the changes facing the health care industry. Change Management Change management is a structured process designed to deal intentionally and directly with human

Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence Domestic Violence What is your definition of love? Domestic violence is not considered love or affection. It is violence abuse. In your eyes what is domestic violence? Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation (thehotline, org). If you’re experiencing this you might have been hit, kicked, choked, and/or controlled. Physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and economical abuse are key warning signs. Abuse is a repetitive pattern of behaviors to maintain power and control over an intimate partner (thehotline.org). The following are behaviors that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish, or force them to behave in ways they do not want (thehotline.org). This also includes threats and intimidation. Warning signs you are in an abusive relationship include forbidding you from eating or sleeping, damaging your property when they’re angry by either throwing objects, punching walls, kicking doors, etc., and or using weapons to threaten to hurt you, or actually hurting you with weapons (thehotline.org). A woman of the name Jessica was stuck in an abusive relationship. She said, â€Å"I was a prisoner in my own home† (Axelord). Her boyfriend beats her, verbally abused her, and controlled her. He made sure she didn’t leave the house without him. He tapped her phone and made sure she knew not to eat, sleep, or shower without him being home to watch her every move. He installed cameras around the house to make sure Jessica wasn’t doing anything behind his back. If they trap you in your home or keep you from leaving, you’re in an abusive relationship. Jessica’s boyfriend claimed abusing her was his sign to show her he loved her and didn’t want to lose her (Axelord). Jessica said, â€Å"His excuse was he was afraid to lose me cause he loved me so much and that was his way of showing me that he loved me† (Axelord). This is what goes on in the minds of abusers. Jessica knew she was in a domestic relationship, but she had no way to get out until one day Jessica’s sister called the cops on her boyfriend and got a restraining order (Axelord). Not everyone knows they are in a domestic violence, the victims are manipulated into thinking it is a sign of compassion and love. More red flags include abandoning you in unfamiliar places, driving recklessly or dangerously when you are in the car with them, and or forcing you to use drugs or alcohol are red flags (thehotline.org). Calling you names, insulting you or continually criticizing you, refusing to trust you and acting jealous or possessive, and or trying to isolate you from family or friends are the first warning signs (thehotline.org). Monitoring where you go, who you call and who you spend time with, demanding to know where you are every minute, threatening to hurt you, the children, your family or your pets is when you seek help (thehotline.org). The first people to notice what is going on are family, friends, and neighbors. Domestic violence happens to both men and women on a daily basis. Women 20-24 years old are at the greatest risk. 1 in 3 women are homicide victims and murdered by their partner each year (SafeHorizon.org). Four million women experience physical assault and rape by their partner each year (SafeHorizon.org). 517 children witness domestic violence each year. Three in four children see the violence happening to their mother or father. 21% of children hear the violence going on. 3.3-10 million children are exposed to domestic violence yearly (SafeHorizon.org). Many children are not safe from this violence. Most of the time, the abuser also goes after the child. More likely than not the child is emotionally scarred for life. According to race, 53% White people are abused, 20% African American people, 16% Latino, and 6% Other (SafeHorizon.org). According to income the following are abused, 28% under $20,000, 30% making $20,000-$50,000, 18% making $50,000-$75,000, and 24% making more than $75,000 (SafeHorizon.org). Some risk factors related to domestic violence include young pregnant women because they are more likely to be targeted compared to older women (apa.org). The younger the easier to be manipulated and used. Domestic violence takes place between 6pm and 6am (apa.org). 60% of incidents happen at home (apa.org). 30%-60% of families experiencing domestic violence include poverty, substance abuse, and other violence (SafeHorizon.org). Domestic is the third leading cause of homelessness among families (apa.org). 1/3 of abusers are using New York shelters (apa.org). This is what you can do to help yourself when the abuser is not around; call a local battered womens shelter or domestic violence hotline and tell them what happened, ask them what your choices are to protect yourself, and what to do to end the violence (venetiservices.eu). Discuss the abusers pattern of violence with someone at a shelter or crisis line and think about what risks, there might be if you talk about leaving (venetiservices.eu). You should encourage your abuser to go to a group for batterers (venetiservices.eu.) If you’re a friend or family member you can encourage the victim to get to safety and help keep that person safe. Confront the abuser if you can do it safely (SafeHorizon.org). Dont accept excuses for violence from the people you love. If your loved one starts controlling your life and taking advantage of you, it is time to leave. Your significant other should always be there for you and care for you. If they ever lay a hand on you immediately call the police. On average it is said that it takes 7 tries to officially get out of an abusive relationship (Axelord.) A significant other should never lay a hand on you if it is not for comfort or affection. If you are physically, mentally, or emotionally abused, it is not love. That does not show that your significant other cares for you. You need to stand up for yourself and get help. Being in an unstable relationship may cause harm to you or your family. People have died, and people have been injured. Children are scared for the rest of their lives. Pay attention to the warning signs and seek help immediately if there are any red flags. The ones you love should respect you and care for you and your family. Works Cited Abuse Defined. The National Domestic Violence Hotline RSS2. Sunshine and Shadow

New York: Sunshine and Shadow The â€Å"Sunshine and Shadow† section of the New York Documentary series by Ric Burns was certainly named for a purpose. Right at the start of the documentary section, it is made clear why the contrasting themes of sunshine and shadow are appropriate for New York in 1865. In the â€Å"Gilded Age† of America, there were two components of life in New York City. There was the image that was made visible to the general public and outsiders, which was the extreme wealth and expansion going on in the city at the time. This portion of the city is representative of the â€Å"sunshine†, symbolizing success, visibility, and fortune. Secondly, there was the latter part of life in New York City, the seemingly masked and forgotten aspect of New York City at the time, which was the poverty. This era in New York City marked a grossly contrasting socioeconomic age, with those living far beyond their needs, and the vast amount of poor living far belo w the poverty line. The rich businessmen in the city reaped millions from corruption, expansion, and laundering money, while the poor struggled to survive in packed tenements with large families. The poor worked constantly and brutally hard in low-paying factories, only to barely keep up with rent and food for their families. Corrupt businessmen such as Cornelius Vanderbilt and William Tweed illegally procured millions, redefining wealth, as the other half of New York City lived in disease and despair. There were mansions being built on 5th street, while several blocks away the other half of the New York City population struggled. Finally, in 1896, Jacob Riise published â€Å"How the Other Half Lives†, exposing the hidden aspects of life for the poor and sick in New York City. The publication contained real photos, taken of the tenements, bars, and homeless in the poor sections of New York. It brought to attention the unacceptability of the difference in lives of those in the à ¢â‚¬Å"sunshine† and those in the â€Å"shade†. The content in this documentary was represented extremely well, and it certainly displayed the feelings and happenings of New York City in 1865. The film did a good job of starting off explaining the contrast in wealth in the city during the time period, explaining the massive expansion and development of infrastructure that was occurring in the city at the time.It then moved on to the true happenings of the city at the time, which was the appalling poverty that plagued roughly half the city. The film was set up for a certain shock value, and it certainly demonstrated to the viewer the severity of the situation in the city. The documentary then went into further detail, thoroughly explaining the causes of the difference in wealth in the city. It did a very good job detailing the major events that explained the incredible wealth in the city at the time, such as the corruption and expansion. The documentary explained how place s such as the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park became stages for outsiders to see the scale on which wealth differed in the city. I believe that the best part of the documentary was the portion explaining and going into depth about the tenements and poverty in some parts of the city. It showed images that helped viewers translate the situation that they’re being told about into real images and events. I believe that Ric Burns did a great job representing the Gilded Age of New York City, and the â€Å"Sunshine and Shade† aspect of it.My reaction to the events of the time period consists of anger and disappointment. I believe that America was supposed to stand for equal opportunity and a chance to succeed, but for immigrants new to the city, this was a falsity. Without pre-existing connections and job offers, the new world of New York City was nearly impossible for an immigrant to thrive in. As a result of the disproportion of wealth in the city, immigrants were simply t hrown into a growing pile of poverty. At the time period, the city needed presidential and governmental guidance and discipline, something that was clearly lacking. Thanks to overwhelming corruption and greed, the other half of the city was forgotten about and misused. The greed in the city at the time led to money being spent on the wrong things, leaving half of the population grossly uncared for. I certainly can say that I would not have wanted to live in this time period in New York City, despite it being the mecca of the United States at the time, and the center of expansion and growth.
